Political: Why do you think this country has been great so far?

As I was driving with the radio off to cast my absentee ballot yesterday it occurred to me that the answer a person gives to that question likely correllates strongly with how they vote.

For me, it's individual freedom and liberty. That's what has made this country great so far, and that's why I voted against our President. All the other policy reasons aside, (and they are legion) the power grab that was the Health Care Takeover and the insidious erosion of freedom that is the Individual Mandate were and are unacceptable.

Because you have geographic loyalties.
French people think France is Great.
Bolivians think Bolivia is great.
Egyptians believe it also.
It is Just normality.

Most of you think your mom was the best cook in the world.

The rest is fluff they want you to think.
by turdly November 4, 2012 11:38 AM

I firmly believe my CFPB job application has the best chance of acceptance if I vote for Obama.
by Dr. Branker November 4, 2012 11:46 AM

The difference, turdly, is we aren't France, Boliva or Egypt, instead we are great in comparison. Both in economic power, military power, freedoms etc.

We are the country people in mass migrate to.

It's not just national pride, it's wholly demonstrable.

It's not just opinion, it's fact.

And france believe that Albanians come to them for the same reason.

And Russia, back in the old days, had all of theirs convince that they were the greatest nation on Earth until the veil lifted.

I do not doubt, nor counter your claims that we are indeed the greatest based on numbers or anything else that can be imagined.

Read the question. Read it as if you lived anywhere else.
It doesn't say greatest. It says great so far.

They all think they are great.
Again, I attack the answers to come as narrow of thought. Nothing else. Your answer is par.

And for the record; MY mom had about four dishes that were above average at best. My dad thinks differently. I try not to play favorites or let SENTIMENTALITY invade my naswers nor sway my opinion.
by turdly November 4, 2012 12:22 PM

"We are the country people in mass migrate to."
by Lex Parsimoniae November 4, 2012 11:56 AM

That is an exceedingly important point. My people came over because they were starving trying to farm the land they were allowed to work in Sweden. My paternal side came from Netherlands to build their business and worship in freedom.
by lil_oh_me November 4, 2012 12:29 PM

"And Russia, back in the old days, had all of theirs convince that they were the greatest nation on Earth until the veil lifted. "

True, but we didn't buy it, we knew better.

Again, there's a difference on the myth you sell yourself and your citizens and the actual facts.

"Read the question. Read it as if you lived anywhere else.
It doesn't say greatest. It says great so far. "

Yes, so far as in the last 200+ years.

And I am aware of the perception in other countries, having lived in Japan, Korea, Philipines, and traveled to China, Thailand, etc.

"I try not to play favorites or let SENTIMENTALITY invade my naswers nor sway my opinion."
by turdly November 4, 2012 12:22 PM

And yet you do. Unless you're going Clinton'esque on us and going with the
"Depends on what the meaning of Great is."

"I do not doubt, nor counter your claims that we are indeed the greatest based on numbers or anything else that can be imagined."

That could be expanded on in detail, but it will do.

It's not a matter of perception or sentimentality, that belongs to France and Bolivia.

You seem to be the one that has a penchant for denying the facts to maintain a consistent narrative you want to preserve.

by Lex Parsimoniae November 4, 2012 12:36 PM

T-Man - my question was "Why do YOU think this country has been great so far." Not "Why do you think others think this country has been great so far."

by MichiganTed November 4, 2012 12:38 PM

I do not think my country any greater than any other citizen believes theirs to be. I'm happy here, I'm guessing at least a voting majority is happy in [for the most part] their countries.

There. I simpled that down for you.

As for our propaganda machine and whether we are indeed the shining knight, the sheep in wolfs clothing, the wolf in sheep's clothing, or just out and out a combination of C.H.A.O.S. and C.O.B.R.A. is up for contemplation.

It's a silly question. One you would ask a 9 year old right after the pledge of allegiance.

I do not dispute the question as irrational of of ill intent, I dispute it as valuable as to counter opinion.

Damned if you do, damned if you do.

by turdly November 4, 2012 12:58 PM

turdly. You clearly loooove playing the contrarian role. But that is sometimes so forced as to be almost laughable.

Without the stablizing effect of the US, both in terms of its military and economic strength, the world would be a far poorer, less healthy, and less secure place. Far from perfect, we have been the single greatest force for good in the world for decades. Obama, of course, is putting that at risk but, as mentioned here earlier, that is a fact. Not in dispute.

I would expect other citizens to be proud of their coutries. That is not the issue. But our country has certifiably been the glue that holds together the free world.

by Fire for Effect November 4, 2012 1:21 PM

Yes, I had to force this one.
I believe I would be just as proud as a Frenchman or Mexican If I knew no better.
I have heard ignorant Americans, while in other countries, just rail on this fact. It is rude. We know it. I know I'm 6'4", no need to beat on petite men ever.
There is pride, and then there is beating an unworthy opponent beyond submission.

I try to maintain a neutral and contrary stance.
by turdly November 4, 2012 1:27 PM

Loud, arrogant Americans abroad is a whole other topic. We are not speaking to citizens of other countries now. We are speaking among ourselves. Other counties have plenty of which to be proud, but facts are facts. I think we can speak freely here without fear of hurting anyone's feelings.

by Fire for Effect November 4, 2012 1:43 PM

Because we can get 60oz soda refills for less than 2 bucks. God Bless America! Unless you live in NYC and are restricted to 160z.

by dark pool November 4, 2012 3:09 PM

From this point on I am referring to Turdly as Septic Tank.
by ACS2.0 November 4, 2012 3:23 PM

"I believe I would be just as proud as a Frenchman or Mexican If I knew no better."

That is the correct statement. "If I knew no better".

That's the sentimentalist.
That's what you are leaning on.

Outside of that, the subject is not up for contemplation. It's exemplified by facts.
by Lex Parsimoniae November 4, 2012 3:34 PM

Searching my post for a statement that this county is "greater than" - and just finding a simple question of why individuals think this country has been great so far....

Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness.

(libs...the PURSUIT, not the guarantee)

by Fire for Effect November 4, 2012 6:12 PM

We are desire equal opportunity to purue.

Ain't the opportunity ain't equal out there..it is definitely skewed in favor of the haves..and that is the way conservatives prefer it
by Concerned American November 4, 2012 6:41 PM

pursue
by Concerned American November 4, 2012 6:43 PM

Yea CA. The haves need to pay the way for the have nots. I mean, every poor kid is entitled to go to Disneyland, so if they can't afford to go, Disneyland just charges the rich more to get in to compensate for the poor. And throw on top of that race. If they are poor and black then Disneyland pays them to visit. Is this how fair works for you CA?
by the voice of reason November 4, 2012 7:35 PM

Uhhhh we are FREE? We have LIBERTY? Only what our rulers wnat us to believe we have. We have ZERO control over the politicians. They do whatever they want and hide most if it using NATIONAL SECURITY as a reason we sheeople cant be told. We have our own GESTAPO---the IRS which isnt legal anyway. We are afraid of the government.

Have we been great? Great liars. Great meddlers in other countries affairs. Grerat war mongers (This side of WW2) so we coulkd make the sheeople think we need BILLIONS of tax dollars for defense. Thankd GOD and our politicians that we are at war in the middle east. Surely by now our shores would have been invaded. Thousands of our best young people have been murdered over there by our government in the name of preserving democracy and 'protecting our nation'. Oh brother---

Now its time for some of you to say 'Hey, its the best thing going, get the hell out if you dont love it, you pinko.'

Well folks, If you have a garden with 50% poisonous weeds and your neighbors gardens have 75% poisonous weeds, do you not WEED OUT THE BAD because the others have more? Do you love your poison weeds?

This country isnt the world leader of anything now except wasting tax dollars. Bring it back. Do something about it. STOP PAYING TAXES until its not wasted on million dollar hammers. Will you do that? HELL NO you wont. You are pussies and afraid of the IRS jack booted thugs.
by Cedonulli2 November 4, 2012 7:48 PM

I haven't been to Disneyland for myself and no a trip to Disneyland isn't quite it.

Maybe a child going to a low income school getting enough knowledge to enroll in an AP class that isn't even offered at such a school.

Equal opportunity to education is what I refer to. The real world ain't a trip to Disneyland
by Concerned American November 4, 2012 8:26 PM

..it is definitely skewed in favor of the haves...by Concerned American November 4, 2012 6:41 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THAT is the reason to strive and progress and do all you can to insure that your offspring does better than you.

It SHOULD be skewed in favor of the haves...and everyone should strive to be one.

I once cried because I had no shoes, then I met a man with no feet.

Or somesuch hosreshit.

Everyone is a have to someone, everyone is a have not to someone.

The mythical 'Haves' will always be the excuse for the 'mythical [and jealous and possibly lazy] 'have nots'.

No matter if the 'haves' have love, or money, or first born make child, or two grains of rice instead of one, the 'have nots' will blame them for their success.
by turdly November 4, 2012 10:44 PM

The haves is a club they do not wish to share entrance with the have nots. Strive or not doesn't matter. My mother busted down the door to the club for me with education. The majority are still locked out of a decent education thereby locked out of the club.

The wealth of our society is in the hands of the top 20%. And that is where the GOP intends to keep it.

The income gap (proof of the have and have nots) growing everyday is mythical..that's nice to know it is just an imaginary thing lol
by Concerned American November 4, 2012 11:02 PM

Oh and I think it is great for having the most vibrant, industrious, prosperous middle class the world has ever seen...which is losing its luster through top down policies of the GOP.

It's not the top 20% that makes us the greatest nation. It is the middle 60%
by Concerned American November 4, 2012 11:41 PM

we had a vision of freedom, fought
for freedom and now are trying to regain
it.

pursuit of happiness would be my answer.
by dblbogey2 November 5, 2012 9:49 AM

"The haves is a club they do not wish to share entrance with the have nots."

There is a long list of people that totally invalidate that statement.

The breaking point to be a top 20% earner is
$92K.

As we've discussed before, I was born and lived in the bottom 30%, single mom supporting 3 boys on a secretary's salary. While growing up we never owned a home, mostly lived in apartments.

You as well, I presume, are now are above the 20% threshold yet didn't start out there.

I worked full time to go to college at night.

Went from there.

We assess where we are, decide where we want to be, choose what we are willing to do and what we are willing to give up to get there.

And it's the Dems that foster the perpetuation and growth of the low income earners.

The GOP doesn't keep anyone from succeeding, they just ask that you earn it. Success isn't an entitlement or a right.

Quit whining.

by turdly November 5, 2012 10:28 AM

CA,

Things have always been slanted toward the "Haves". That's why your relatives were chained in racks and shipped here for slavery. The "Have" black tribes, captured and sold the "Have not" black folks.

Lifes a bitch, read up on Darwin.

Turdly,

My Mom was a bad cook. Thank God for Heinz ketchup. But she was a hell of a nursing professor.
