Hey you know what I read?
I never knew this, woulda never made the connection, but do you remember when the 'station wagon' died?
We're talking very late 70s. They just stopped selling so damn many station wagons. Turns out, due to the fuel crunch and all, liberal democrats decided to slap big surcharges on full size cars that got terrible gas mileage.
Well, that never solved the problem of families needing to tote around a boy scout troop and their gear and all those other suburban things you need a barn on wheels to do, so it led car manufacturers down the path of creativity.
The govt cracked down on cars. But they never said anything about trucks...
Three things happened because liberal democrats tried to mandate fuel mileage and socially engineer things that couldn't be socially engineered:
1. The fastest vehicle of 1978-9 was a truck. the Dodge 'L'il Red Express'. The first recreational street truck. Equipped with a non-emissions controlled (remember: it's a truck) police interceptor 360 small block, it ate the Corvette of the day for lunch.
2. Chrysler got REAL creative about the whole family vehicle thing and created a 'mini van', essentially a 3/4 size Dodge panel-van with a sliding door and some cup-holders, thinking that might sell.
3. Ford thought hard and ended up taking their F-100 truck and putting a permanent shell over the back of it, ditching the truck bed, and putting in an extra bank of seats...they called it the Bronco.
So in summary, overreaching libs in all their do-goodieness to curtail gasoline use, demonstrated the law of unintended consequences yet again by creating the sport truck market, spawning the mini-van, and literally giving birth to the SUV.
Way to curtail gasoline use guys. Good job.

I remember the Lil Red Express. I'll do you one better. 4 or 5 years ago Dodge came out with the Viper truck. Same engine as the Viper. I drove one, talk about a truck with balls.
